Transcription can be needed in many different circumstances – including as the basis of translated subtitles, a voiceover script, or simply a written record of what was said.
At Dixon Associates, we have an expert team of transcriptionists covering a wide range of languages and have over 50 years of experience providing high-quality transcriptions for many industries.
Three Types of Transcription to Meet Your Needs
We offer three types of transcription depending on the purpose for which you need the transcript.
So, whether you need absolute accuracy or a polished text, our expert transcription services are designed to meet your individual requirements.
Verbatim Transcription
Verbatim transcription provides an exact record of what was said. It includes all utterances – slang, filler words, stuttering, repetitions, coughing, laughter, incomplete sentences, etc. – with no grammatical or stylistic changes at all.
Verbatim transcription is mostly used in legal situations, such as in court cases or police interviews, as it can provide insights into the speaker’s behaviour as well as the words they said
Intelligent Verbatim Transcription
Intelligent verbatim transcription is similar to traditional verbatim transcription, as it still provides an exact record of what was said. However, some unintentional utterances – such as filler words, stuttering, coughing, laughter, etc. – are removed to improve clarity when reading the transcript.
Some minor grammatical changes may also be made, including standardisation of some slang terms and contractions (e.g. ‘gonna’ would be replaced with ‘going to’), but this will not involve stylistic changes. This is the most popular form of transcription overall, especially in medical and corporate sectors.
Edited Transcription
Edited transcription is exactly as it sounds – fully edited. It starts as a verbatim transcription but is then grammatically and stylistically edited to produce a publication-quality text, with emphasis on readability over absolute accuracy.
Edited transcription is the best option if the transcript is to be translated, for example as the basis of translated subtitles or a voiceover script. It is also useful for journalistic interviews and for minutes of meetings and conferences.
