Editing vs proofreading – what is the difference?

The terms ‘editing’ and ‘proofreading’ are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to different services that require different skillsets and expertise. We can provide both editing and proofreading in over 400 languages, and our project managers are always happy to advise you on which service might be best for you.

Editing
Editing is an in-depth process that involves assessing the text word-by-word and making linguistic, grammatical and stylistic corrections and improvements.

It can also involve ensuring compliance with company glossaries, style guides or regional preferences.

If the text is a translation, the editor will be bilingual and a native speaker of the target language. They will check the translation to ensure that it is a completely accurate representation of the original text.

Proofreading
Proofreading involves checking the text for stylistic and industry-specific preferences, as well as technical accuracy. It is typically monolingual, although it can also sometimes be bilingual. Proofreaders also check non-text elements of the document, such as the layout, formatting, diagrams and illustrations.

Whereas the focus of editing is to make corrections and improvements, proofreading is intended as a final check to ensure that the text meets specific requirements and guidelines. It is therefore common for proofreading to be performed in addition to editing for maximum peace of mind.

Our standard translation service is known as TEP – Translation, Editing and Proofreading. This three-stage process ensures that the translated text is of the highest possible quality and is completely accurate. In some cases where budgets are tight, we can bypass the editing stage; however, the proofreading stage is always included as part of our essential quality assurance process. Proofreading is also included as the final stage of all of our services that involve text, including subtitling, transcription, localisation, etc.
