Combatting Modern-Day Slavery in Every Aspect of our Business Personal | Professional | Precise
At Dixon Associates, we have robust policies and procedures in place to identify and combat modern day slavery, including checks on our suppliers and partner agencies, and fair payment terms for freelance linguists.
What is Modern Slavery?
Modern slavery covers a range of legal concepts, including exploitation, human trafficking, debt bondage, forced marriage, etc. In the context of our business, the most relevant category is exploitation – taking advantage of freelance linguists by forcing them to accept low rates or unrealistic turnaround times.
Our Approach to Combatting Modern Slavery
We always ensure that our freelance linguists’ rates are reasonable and in line with industry standards. For example, we never stipulate rates to our linguists, allowing them to charge as they see fit to cover their costs. We also implement a minimum charge for small jobs where the rate per word would not cover administration costs, and pass this on to our linguists.
Additionally, since all our project managers are also linguists themselves, we understand the amount of time it typically takes to translate a given volume of text – and that this can vary depending on the complexity. We never impose unrealistically tight deadlines on our teams and always ensure that we have sufficient resources to keep up with demand, allowing our linguists to take their time and produce their best work.
When working with partner agencies and onboarding new providers, we always conduct thorough checks to ensure that they share our commitment to fair pay and combatting exploitation. For example, we always question suspiciously low rates or unrealistic claims of daily volumes, as this can indicate that linguists are being overworked or underpaid.
